Beyond the Deficit Model: Neurodiversity-Affirmative Adult Autism Assessment

CE Hours 1

About this live event

This will be a hybrid/in-person presentation. We will start in-person registration and networking from 11:30-12pm with presentation starting promptly at noon for our virtual attendees. This presentation redefines autism through a neurodiversity-affirmative lens, moving beyond the traditional deficit-based model to highlight autism as a natural and valuable variation of human cognition. A key focus will be on recognizing autism in high-masking individuals, who often camouflage their traits to meet neurotypical expectations, making identification more complex. We will also explore how to select and adapt autism assessment tools to align with affirming practices, ensuring accurate and supportive identification. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of autism, develop strategies for recognizing diverse autistic presentations, and learn how to implement assessment approaches that validate and empower neurodivergent individuals.

Learning Objectives

  • Redefine autism through a neurodiversity-affirmative lens, explaining how autism can be conceptualized beyond the deficit model
  • Recognize autism in high-masking individuals
  • Select and adapt autism assessment tools for affirming practice

Agenda

In-person registration and networking will begin promptly at 11:30. The in-person and virtual presentation will begin at 12pm.
